As National Mutt Day is fast approaching on July 31st, there’s no better time to celebrate these wonderful dogs and consider adopting one!
Adaptability
Mutts are mixes of multiple breeds, and as such, they are not bred for specific “jobs” or purposes. Mutts can be more adaptable and easier to train to fit your lifestyle. They can also be great service dogs as they often have a combination of the best qualities from different breeds.
Cost
The cost upfront for mutts is generally much more affordable than that of a purebred. As adorable as purebreds are, the costs to purchase from a breeder or pet store can be astronomical. Shelter adoption fees are reasonable and often include certain veterinary expenses such as spaying or neutering, vaccines, and microchipping.
Health
Since mutts are a mix of different gene pools, it has often been accepted that they are less likely to be born with genetic disorders. They benefit from the concept of “hybrid vigor,” which holds that genetic diversity reduces the risk of inheriting breed-specific genetic conditions. This is not to say that every mutt is healthier than every purebred dog; every dog is different. Still, all dogs require routine check-ups and vaccines to maintain their health and detect early signs of illness.
Saving Lives
Regardless of where you choose to adopt, bringing a shelter dog home frees up vital space and resources for another animal in need. Therefore, by adopting one dog, you are not only saving your pet’s life but also enabling other dogs to enter the shelter.

- Spoil your dog: If you already have a mixed breed in your family, you can take today as an opportunity to pamper your own pup at home. Give them their favorite treat, do their favorite activity, and make it a day to remember!
